EPA to get more aggressive on civil rights reviews after decades of inaction

+ Kudos to the Center for Public Integrity’s Yue Qui and Talia Buford for spurring the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to adopt a more aggressive approach to civil rights reviews after their reporting on the agency’s decades of inaction.

+ The rise of family offices, which handle the personal finances of hedge fund managers such as Bill Ackman from within their own firms, is raising concerns since they are more lightly regulated than hedge funds and could bring up conflicts since investments might overlap or collide.

Why the EPA is doing nothing about environmental racism

+ The Environmental Protection Agency isn’t doing much to take on environmental racism – its office responsible for handling alleged civil rights abuses is “chronically unresponsive to complaints and has never made a formal finding of discrimination,” reports the Center for Public Integrity.

+ Black kids were 2.5 times more likely to be held in custody before their trials than white children and nearly three times more likely to be sent to state facilities for violating conditions of parole, according to a new Justice Department report.

+ A former executive with consulting firm Louis Berger, Satyakam Mohanty, was arrested today on charges of bribing officials in India to win lucrative contracts for work on water development projects in the states of Goa and Guwahati.

+ Citigroup is being investigated by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau over its student-loan servicing practices, reports Bloomberg News.
